The Lower Castle of Marostica (Vicenza), whose construction in present-day piazza Castello began in 1312, has a keep and a structure that extends outwards to create a walled enclosure with merlons. The keep in particular is 10m wide and 34m tall, divided into 7 inner storeys linked by 126 steps. Two drawbridges, on the north and south facades, cross a broad moat.
The ground floor armoury courtyard is bordered by a double cement colonnade with wall frescos with a 15th century well in Asiago stone at the centre. On the floor above, the loggia, decorated with 17th century frescoes leads to the ancient reception rooms and a display of costumes created for the city’s biennial “living” chess game.
