The ruins of Andraz Castle, a medieval fortress in local stone, can be found on a rocky spur that dominates the valley below in Livinallongo del Col di Lana (Belluno). The fortress could only be reached by a stone ramp, part of which has been recovered, which linked the different overlapping floors. The ruins of a boundary wall around the spur reveals the joists that supported the guards’ lookout walkway. Near the main entrance is a 16th century chapel dedicated to St. Raphael whose priceless wooden altar is conserved in the church in Andraz.
After the Napoleonic wars, the castle was disused, abandoned and sold. In the early 19th century, the furnishings and documents were removed, culminating in 1851 with the demolition of the roof to access wood and iron. Seriously damaged during WWI, it was consequently restored several times. Today the castle houses a museum about the history of Andraz with a focus on the transformations of the castle and the surrounding countryside.
