Located on the top of a rocky hill, on the right bank of the Leno river, Rovereto Castle has dominated the town since the 13th-14th century, when the Castelbarco family built the oldest nucleus as a fortress to enforce their feudal power in Val Lagarina.
Conquered by the Venetians in the 15th century, it was transformed into a perfect military fortress, creating its current polygonal shape and adding the walkway with cannons, towers, moat and siege well. These modifications along with the four powerful corner bastions make the castle a perfect example of late-medieval Alpine fortification.
Currently owned by the Municipality of Rovereto, the castle houses the Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra (Italian Historical War Museum). Founded in 1921, it comprises a large collection of memorabilia, photographs and testimonies from the two world wars.
