The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Monte Berico, one of Italy’s greatest centres of Marian worship, is located on monte Berico and dominates the city of Vicenza.
The great basilica, an example of Veneto Baroque architecture, is cubic in shape and crowned with a large cupola, the interior laid out on a Greek cross. The neo-classical bell tower was designed by Antonio Priovene in 1826. The church conserves numerous works of art, including: Cena di San Gregorio Magno by Paolo Veronese (1572); Pietà by Bartolomeo Montagna (early 1500s), Vergine con gli Evangelisti and Battesimo del Cristo by Alessandro Magonza, and Vicenza e la Vergine di Monte Berico by the Venetian painter Giulio Carponi (1651).
The small Gothic cloister has little stone pillars supporting ogival arches with terracotta cornices and a central well.
The sanctuary opens onto piazzale della Vittoria, an esplanade with a wide panoramic view that was built in 1924 to commemorate those who died in WWI. It is 110m long with an average width of 60m and bordered by a stone balcony which offers information on the key elements of the skyline.
