Located in the heart of the Veneto region, Vicenza is the city of Andrea Palladio and known as the “city-theatre” because of the numerous architectural masterpieces it encloses. The name of Palladio is linked to the city through to the buildings he designed and in 1994 the historical centre was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Corso Palladio, the main pedestrian thoroughfare of the city, links piazza del Castello to piazza Matteotti and is the location for numerous historical buildings such as: Palazzo Thiene Bonin Longare, Palazzo Porto Breganze, the Church of San Filippo Neri, Palazzo Trissino-Baston, Church of San Gaetano Thiene and Palazzo Leone Montanari.
Piazza dei Signori is the most symbolic place in Vicenza and embellished by the monumental Basilica Palladiana with two superimposed galleries with loggias featuring Venetian windows; the 82m high torre Bissara; the 16th century loggia del Capitaniato by Palladio; Palazzo del Monte di Pietà; and two marble columns, one bearing the lion of St. Mark, the other Christ Redeemer.
Another of Palladio’s architectural masterpieces is the Olympic Theatre, located inside Palazzo del Territorio. It is the oldest indoor, permanent theatre of the modern age, characterised by elliptical stepped seating for the public and a spectacular white stone proscenium.
Also worthy of note are Palazzo Chiericati, which houses the Municipal Museum of Vicenza, and modern Palladio Museum in Palazzo Barbarano, which focusses on making architecture accessible using Andrea Palladio as a guideline.
