After climbing to 1,000m above sea level from the plain in the Vicentine Alps, the landscape opens out to reveal pastures dotted with small towns and a background of fir forests: the plateau of Asiago or the Seven Municipalities.
The plateau is revealed after climbing a steep road with ten hairpin bends: vast pastures, bell-towers that rise above small villages and the surrounding mountain peaks. In addition to Asiago, the plateau includes the municipalities of Rotzo, Roana, Lusiana, Conco, Gallio, Foza and Enego.
The plateau suffered terribly in 1916 during the WWI, in particular in the areas of Ortigara, Cima Caldiera, Portule, Cima Undici and Cima Dodici where the ruins of numerous forts and trenches are still conserved. Forts that are still recognisable include Verena, Interrotto, Corbin, Lisser and Campolongo.
The Asiago War Memorial on Leiten hill conserves the remains of over 50,000 soldiers who fell at the battle of mount Ortigara.
