The main characters in the film move between Italy and Germany. The opening footage features a negotiation for the sale of art fakes in the majestic Piazza Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin’s Mitte neighbourhood. Several scenes later, a man is killed in the aquarium of the city zoo.
Years pass and Tom Ripley (John Malkovich) is in Veneto, living at Villa Emo, a beautiful Palladian home with frescoes by Giambattista Zelotti in Fanzolo, hamlet of Vedelago (TV). The dining room was created in the Stanza delle Arti whose north-facing wall features a fresco of the Allegory of Architecture. In one scene, Ripley contemplates a fresco of Venus dissuading Adonis from hunting in the room dedicated to the goddess of love herself.
Ripley drives down via Regina Cornaro in Asolo (TV) to meet the picture framer Jonathan whose shop is in the village. The interiors of the Caffè Centrale become a regular meeting place for the main characters. Mr Reeves, Ripley’s long-term business partner, stays at Hotel Villa Cipriani which offers a view over the Asolo valley and Monte Grappa. He attempts to involve Ripley in a deal as they walk through piazza dei Signori in Vicenza. Ripley’s wife performs a harpsichord concerto in the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza. The historic Caffè Pedrocchi in Padua was also used in the film.
