Piazza dei Signori is the heir to Vicenza’s medieval piazza Grande and Roman forum. Its modern name derives from the palaces located on the square which represented the rule of the Republic of Venice from 1404 to 1797.
Its rectangular shape measures 28m in length and 122 in width, extending over to the two columns that mark the entrance to piazza Biade. One of these columns, crowned with the winged lion of the Venetian Republic, dates to approx. 1473, the other, featuring Christ Redeemer, to 1640.
The long side of the square features the Basilica Palladiana and 82m high Torre Bissara. The tower (also known as civica) features a clock, created by Faccio Pisano which indicates the phases of the moon along with the those of the sun, placed there in 1378. On the opposite side are the loggia del Capitaniato by Palladio and the Palazzo del Monte di Pietà, comprising the Church of St. Vincent.
