Based on the bestselling novel by Mariapia Veladiano, La vita Accanto by Marco Tullio Giordana is set between the 1980s and the 2000s and tells the story of an influential family in Vicenza which comprises Maria (Valentina Bellè), her husband Osvaldo (Paolo Pierobon) and his twin, Erminia (Sonia Bergamasco), a renowned pianist. Their life is turned upside down by an unpredictable event. Maria gives birth to Rebecca, a normal, very beautiful little girl who, however, has a conspicuous birthmark covering half of her face. The indelible “stain” makes her parents helpless and unhappy, becoming such an obsession for Maria that she rejects her responsibilities as a mother. Rebecca's entire adolescence will be marked by shame and the desire to hide from others. From an early age, however, she reveals extraordinary musical abilities. Her aunt Erminia recognizes her talent and Rebecca becomes her student, the need to erase the "stain" pushing her to assert herself through music.
Giordana chose the young Italian pianist Beatrice Barison for the role of teenage Rebecca. The cast also includes Michela Cescon.
Filming took place in and around Vicenza. Locations included Colle di Monte Berico, where the crew shot in via dei Nani; Villa Valmarana ai Nani, especially at night; viale Dieci Giugno and piazzale della Vittoria. Other locations included the historic centre, the lower loggia of the Palladian basilica, the Salvi garden, contra' Ponte San Paolo, Querini park, piazza dei Signori, and the ponte delle Barche.
Other parts of the film are set inside Palazzo Franceschini Folco, a neoclassical building in the city centre; at the Teatro Olimpico, for the piano concert that coincides with Rebecca’s birth; and in the Ottavio Trento residence, in contra' San Pietro.
