Locations

The game has some extremely superficial reconstructions of its Italian locations. The maps of the game include Operation Husky, the code name for the invasion of Sicily, Operation Baytown, in which troops cross the Strait of Messina, the landings in Salerno, and the battles of Anzio and Montecassino. The game received positive reviews when it was first released, thanks above all to the undeniable innovation it brought to the shooter genre. That said, today the various limitations of the game are clear: Italy is represented by a series of unvaried landscapes, with sterile textures, and stereotyped vegetation and housing that could belong to any Mediterranean setting. The game’s boldest move is its reconstruction of the Abbey of Montecassino, a simplistic and rushed job that shows little regard for the delicate historical debate surrounding the British and American bombings in Italy, which caused irreparable damage to the country’s historical and artistic heritage.
