Designed by Mario Fiorentino in 1972, the Corviale building is located on the south-western periphery of Rome, with open countryside on three sides. The complex is composed of three buildings: the main branch; a parallel, lower branch; and a building that rotates 45° and connects Corviale with the Casetta Mattei area.
Known as the Serpentone, for its length (approx. 1 km), the complex was intended to provide an alternative residential model for the urban development of Rome which, from the 1960’s onwards, had created entire dormitory areas devoid of services. This new model intended to combine private areas with collective activities, residences with services. The first homes were made available in October 1982 and the first illegal occupancy began only several months later, continuing throughout the 1980s and 90s, making the complex a symbol of the degradation on the capital’s outer limits.
