Built in the 1920s, Garbatella is the most recent of the historic neighbourhoods of Rome. It was traditionally divided into parcels where buildings were constructed around courtyards and gardens, once the meeting place for residents with laundry facilities, workshops and cellars, seating and low walls. In the centre of the neighbourhood, housing was arranged in small villas or apartment buildings, at the most three floors high, and great care was taken in the details and range of styles. The first buildings followed the Roman Baroque tradition. With the advent of Fascism, the urban planning of the area underwent a drastic change: the ratio of built area to green spaces dropped significantly and the buildings under construction began to resemble modern apartment condominiums in contrast to the existing villas.
