Testaccio, the 20th rione of Rome, is located on the east bank of the river Tiber, between via Marmorata and the Aurelian walls, and has the shape of an almost regular quadrilateral. Its name derives from mount Testaccio, an artificial 35m high hill formed of pottery shards (in Latin testae) and debris deriving from the transport of goods at the ancient river port of Ripa Grande.
Always a working-class district, Testaccio underwent significant urbanization at the end of the 19th century, when homes were built for the employees of the nearby production plants and the slaughterhouse was opened. Today's neighbourhood is the result of radical transformation and a place rich in cultural interest and archaeological sites.
From piazza Testaccio, continuing towards via Galvani, you reach monte Testaccio. A symbol of the neighbourhood is the slaughterhouse, now a large cultural space, and backdrop to the daily morning market.
Nearby are the non-Catholic Cemetery with its monumental tombs and the Cestia pyramid, a mammoth Egyptian funerary monument.
Another central gathering point is piazza Santa Maria Liberatrice, with the Church of Santa Maria Liberatrice and the Vittoria theatre.
