Santo Stefano di Sessanio is a fortified village in the province of L’Aquila located on the slope leading to the high plain of Campo Imperatore, 1,250 metres above sea level.
The village dates back to the 11th-12th century. Its history from the 13th century onwards is characterised by the presence of the Piccolomini family and then, from the end of the 16th century onwards, the Medici family. Overlooking this Medieval village is an imposing crenelated cylindrical tower, which has been subject to restoration work since the 2009 earthquake. Nowadays the town is a tourist destination given its unique architecture, its location, which makes it the perfect place for lots of recreational activities, and its abundance of accommodation facilities.
