The Castello di Prata or Castel Camponeschi (its Latin name was Castrum Sancti Petri Camponeschi, after the little church) is a medieval borgo (12th-13th century) located on a hill overlooking the archaeological site of Peltuinum in Prata d’Ansidonia (AQ). It was inhabited until 1963 when the last family moved to Prata. The fortified enclosing structure was built between the 14th and 15th centuries during the domination of the Camponeschi family, relatives of Pope Paul IV, who governed the area and had a residence in Prata. The complex includes a rectangular stone wall with the ruins of towers, homes and noble residences. Inside is the Church of St. Peter with two portals and two small rose windows. The defence system that characterises it, the evocative position in the countryside and the widespread reuse of material from nearby Peltuinum make the fortified borgo of Castel Camponeschi unique in Abruzzo.
