The Carlo Goldoni Theatre is the biggest theatre in Livorno, the only big theatre space in the city that survived the bombings of the Second World War and post-war speculation. Its construction was entrusted to young architect Giuseppe Cappellini. It was named the ‘Imperial and Royal Theatre Leopoldo’ in honour of the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo II of Lorena and was opened on 24 July 1847.
