On the banks of its lake, Mergozzo (VB) is considered the southern entry point for the Val D’Ossola. Separated from Lake Maggiore by the continuous flooding of River Toce, Mergozzo and its lake are situated close to the famous areas of Stresa, Verbania and Arona.
The borgo features narrow alleys, stone houses and a central square with an elm tree which, dating to the 1600s and classified a monumental tree of Piedmont, still has luxuriant vegetation despite being completely hollow.
Mergozzo features the ancient thoroughfares of via Ruga and via Scarpia and sacred Romanesque monuments including the Church of St. John the Baptist in Montorfano and little Church of St. Martha in the village centre.
An important megalithic complex, Neolithic Ca' d'la Norma, is situated in the Groppole area: it has a large rock slab, two “cupmarks” and an underground chamber with stone walls.
Small Lake Mergozzo is a popular destination for its beaches, competitive fishing and water sports such as canoeing, kayaking and windsurf. A local hiking trail, the Sentiero Azzurro, starts in Mergozzo, coasts the lake and heads up to Montorfano on the mountain above.
