An hour outside Turin, Saluzzo (CN) at the foot of mount Monviso preserves one of Piedmont’s most beautiful medieval borgos intact.
The borgo, which extends along the hill slope, has a typically 14th century urban layout with cobbled alleys, noble palaces and ancient churches. In the centre are the Cathedral and the Castiglia, a fortified residence belonging to the Marquisate of Saluzzo which now houses museum displays related to prison history and cavalier culture, a historical archive and the IGAV collection of contemporary art. The historical centre also features: Casa Cavassa, the Church of St. John and the ancient Monastery of Our Lady of the Annunciation, headquarters of the Fondazione Scuola di Alto Perfezionamento Musicale.
Just outside the residential centre are the Abbey of Staffarda and the Castle of Manta.
