The small town of Cannobio (VB) is very close to the Swiss border on the western side of Lago Maggiore. Very popular with Swiss, German and Dutch tourists, with an economy driven mostly by tourism and cross-border activity, the town experienced moments of great prosperity in the past and had many flourishing textile and tanning industries well into the second half of the 1900s.
The historical centre features churches from the 1500s dating to the golden age of the Borromeo family, monuments from the time of the Risorgimento such as Giulio Branca’s Lion, placed in 1889 to commemorate the city’s defence against the Austrians, and the Palazzo della Ragione or Parasi, built in 1291.
