The Bauxite Lake is located south of Otranto (near the Baia delle Orte. Bauxite, the mineral used to make aluminium, was mined in the quarry here for around twenty years in the 1960s and 1970s, then loaded onto boats at the town port to be shipped to Marghera, where it was processed.
The quarry was closed in 1976 due to the costs of the mining process. The mine shaft, however, had reached a water table running beneath the quarry, which led to the formation of a small lake. The surrounding area then flourished with aquatic and marshland plants such as reeds.
