South of the Gravina di Riggio, in the countryside outside Grottaglie, the Gorge of Fantiano stretches through a pine forest and Mediterranean maquis, once the imposing natural setting for an important medieval cave settlement, one of the most populated centres of the community. In use since the Neolithic Age, this rock setting was characterized by swathes of terracing, which housed several built chambers, including one with a cistern, accessed by a rock-hewn staircase. These stairs also lead to a garden on a terrace which also contained several caves and recesses used as beehives. The gorge is divided into two parts, one belonging to the municipality, used for cultural events, and a second, private and wild, which includes three caves, the Fovea Cave, the Cave of the Fossils and the Hypogeum of the Beehives.
