Apricena stone is a calcareous stone found in Apulia at the foot of the Gargano, in the area stretching between Apricena, Lesina and Poggio Imperiale. The stone is mined in blocks measuring 315cm long, 170cm wide, at most, the height varying according to the requirements.
The variety of techniques used to extract the blocks including the use of explosive, placed in strategic holes, and of specific saws to cut through. The blocks are then moved with mechanical loaders, and cut into parallelepiped-shaped blocks.
The extraction site in Apricena and Poggio Imperiale is the largest mining area in Southern Italy and the second largest quarry in Italy, after Carrara.
Apricena stone accounts for 90% of regional production and 20% of national production making it a vital resource for the local economy.
