The main square of Genoa, Piazza De Ferrari is also the financial and business heart of the city. It was named after Raffaele De Ferrari, Duke of Galliera, a politician and banker, who contributed economically to the harbour expansion in 1875.
Measuring 11,000m², its irregular shape is due to the urban interventions in the early 20th century which also created the three roads leading to it: via XX Settembre, via Dante, via Petrarca.
In the centre of the square is a monumental fountain built in 1936 with a bronze central basin set in marble concentric basins.
The square holds some of the city’s most important buildings, including: Teatro Carlo Felice, with its original Neoclassical porch and the Palazzo dell'Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti (1831) both designed by the architect Carlo Barabino; the Palazzo della Nuova Borsa which was finished in 1912 and features a Neoclassical exterior and art deco interior (by Adolfo Coppedè); the Palazzo della Regione Liguria (1920) and the Ducal Palace.
