Lago del Salto (RI) is the largest artificial lake in Lazio. It was established in 1940 with the construction of the 90+m high Diga del Salto that dammed the Salto River and flooded the valley in the Cicolano area.
With a wooded and rocky coastline, its waters mingle with those of Lake Turano together feeding the hydroelectric plant of Cotilia which has served the steelworks in Terni since 1942.
On the lakeshore are picturesque residential centres like Borgo San Pietro and Petrella Salto with the Rocca Cenci which offers a wonderful view of the panorama and the Cave of Santa Filippa Mareri, the first saint of the order of the Poor Clares, which can be reached by following the Pilgrim’s Path.
