Lake Bracciano, known in antiquity as Lake Sabatino, is a lake of volcanic origin north of Rome. With a surface area of 56.5 km², it is the eighth largest in Italy and second in Lazio to Lake Bolsena. Gathered on its shoreline are the villages of Bracciano, Anguillara Sabazia and Trevignano Romano, with interesting historical centres and castles.
The ruins of a Neolithic stilt village, dated to 5,500 B.C., were found underwater in the southern part of the lake in the 1980s -1990s. Excavated artefacts included ceramics - cups, plates and large containers for liquids - and a pirogue, a prehistoric rowing boat over 10m long carved out of the trunk of an oak tree, preserved today in the Pigorini Museum of Rome.
