Located at an altitude of 507m, lake Vico, originally lacus Ciminus or Ciminius, in the province of Viterbo has volcanic origins and is surrounded by the Cimini mountains. Its territory extends into the municipalities of both Caprarola and Ronciglione. It took the present name from the Vico family resident in the area. It is likely that this came from Castrum Vici, the castle of the Prefects of Vico, traces of which can be found today amidst the thick vegetation along the southern banks of the lake.
Inhabited since the Neolithic era and later settled by the Etruscans and Romans, its shores alternate wilderness with small beaches. Protected since 1982 as a nature reserve, it offers areas of pristine nature with few human settlements most of which are concentrated in Punta del Lago on the Ronciglione side.
