Lake Scandarello is an artificial reservoir created in 1924 when the river Scandarello was dammed. The surface area of the lake measures 48.5 hectares, it is surrounded by more than 10km of banks and has an average depth of 30m. It stands on the slopes of Monti della Laga which rise to the east, several km distant from Amatrice (RI). The river banks have little vegetation because of a continual variation in water level during the year: when the lake empties out and the water drops, the ruins of a Roman bridge can be seen. The slopes are covered with woods of broadleaf trees.
