Albani Castle

Castello di Urgnano, Via Rocca, Urgnano, BG, Italia

Description

The Albani Castle, also known as the Rocca Albani, in Urgnano (BG), dates to 1354 when the Lord of Milan, Giovanni Visconti, ordered the consolidation of the previous fortified structure. The Albani family, who owned the building until the 19th century, gave it the present shape.

The original square-plan construction in brick is embellished with two massive towers at the entrance and a single corner tower still standing on the north east. The Castle is surrounded by a moat and set amidst the municipality park. Rooms inside are open to the public, a courtyard on the western side and a hanging garden on the east which features nine caricature statues in the grotesque style typical of the 17th century.

Beyond the walls and moat is the farm area, which includes buildings, stables with vaulted ceilings and a courtyard that houses the Albani family chapel which is linked to the castle by a drawbridge.
