Malpaga Castle is located in the area of Cavernago, a small village just outside Bergamo. Imposing and defensive, it was once the centre of the principate built by Bartolomeo Colleoni, Captain-General of the Republic of Venice.
Colleoni bought the ruined castle of Malpaga from the Commune of Bergamo in 1456 intending to make it his home and the centre of his realm. He transformed it into a impregnable fortress, a barracks for his soldiers and a magnificent residence: a princely court to bear witness to his social-military success; a political centre, set in the often-tangled scenario of Italian geopolitics of the time; and a place for his retirement.
Colleoni wanted to consolidate and demonstrate his hard won prestige and power with tangible memorials to his greatness and became a patron of the arts, demonstrating his culture and refinement. The castle walls are almost entirely covered with frescoes depicting life at the time.
