The Castle of Rossino, a complex 13th century construction, dominates a promontory in the foothills of Monte Resegone, overlooking the picturesque hamlet of Rossino, Caloliziocorte below and the Val San Martino, in a historically strategic position.
Overlooking that famous “branch of the lake of Como, which extends toward the south” praised by Alessandro Manzoni in his masterpiece The Betrothed, the castle has fascinated writers, poets and intellectuals for centuries, including Manzoni himself who used it as the dwelling for the character of the Unnamed (Innominato).
The fortress belonged to the Benaglio family, Lords of Val San Martino. It subsequently passed to the Rota family, and later became the setting for commercial trading by the wool and silk merchants, playing an important role in the taxation of the territory. Five of the six original towers are standing today, of which one was adapted into a manor house in the 1800s.
Following careful conservative restoration to preserve the beauty and charm of the ancient structures, the Castle of Rossini is today used for events, both corporate and private, and weddings.
