Beccaria Castle in Pieve del Cairo (PV) dates to the late Middle Ages (14th century).
The square-plan complex has an external ditch and internal courtyard, while the load bearing structure is built of brick, with horizontal structures of wood and brickwork arches.
Over the centuries, the building has been modified extensively, incorporating features from different eras, so now appears something of a compromise between an ancient castle with a single central keep and a more recent version with corner towers.
These radical transformations and extensions were added by the Beccaria and Isimbardi families to the earliest structure of the castle. All that is left of that nucleus is the southwestern corner tower, the broken northeastern tower and the tall eastern tower, once the single central keep.
The complex was originally protected by an external moat, which probably had a drawbridge, and a defensive ravelin.
