Alpe di Siusi, Europe’s largest alpine pasture, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites. Encompassing 57 square kilometers, it is located within the spectacular Sciliar-Catinaccio (Schlern-Rosengarten) Nature Park. One of very few alpine pastures in Europe and boasting one of the main emblems of South Tyrol, Alpe di Siusi is certainly widely known by tourists as a wonderful place to take a relaxing and contemplative walk amidst gently rolling hills.
However, those who are interested in a real challenge will easily find one here: there are hikes on and around the Schlern Massif that require many different levels of skill, via ferrata climbing routes up the striking Rosszähnen rock formations, and high-alpine climbing on the Sassolungo (Langkofel) and Sasso Piatto (Plattkofel) peaks.
Alpe di Siusi is just as attractive in winter as it is in summer: you’ll definitely want to stick around for a while and enjoy some hiking or sledding. In addition to après ski parties amidst the hustle and bustle of the ski slopes, you’ll also find pristine locations and contemplative places to stop off for a bite to eat.
