The Nomentano Bridge stands at the point where the via Nomentana extended past the river Aniene in the foothills of the Monte Sacro, a hill that had witnessed the seasonal herd migrations since antiquity.
The first construction dates to the Republic, its fortification to the 8th century. Destroyed and rebuilt several times, the bridge combines a range of construction materials and techniques that span a wide chronological range from antiquity through the Middle Ages to modernity.
It is today one of the most evocative monuments of the Roman countryside, appreciated and portrayed by numerous engravers and artists between the 16th and 19th centuries and from the mid 1800s by photographers. It is a large travertine arch, topped with a medieval fortification with merlons and two smaller side arches on each end.
