Limosano (CB) is a village in Molise of less than 1,000 residents. The ancient heart of Limosano rises from a hill of tuff rock, while the more recent area has developed beneath the Ducal Palace which was built on a rise. In the 12th century it was a bishopric.
Following two large-scale restoration interventions on the 11th century Cathedral, dedicated to Santa Maria Maggiore, the only original part remaining is the underground crypt. There are two more churches in the town: Santo Stefano, in the highest part of the village, and St. Francis of Assisi, at the gates of the ancient centre.
The ducal castle was probably built on a Lombard fort around the 13th century. The building rises directly from the rock on three floors and three different entrances allow access to an internal courtyard.
