Guardialfiera (province of Campobasso) is located on the ridge of a hill to the left of the River Biferno. Over the centuries it has undergone significant transformations: originally consisting of a single fortress guarding the valley of Biferno, later, the church and then the first houses were built around it, surrounded by defensive walls. The area is still known as Piedicastello.
The historical centre, with its small number of cases in stone, is dominated by the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption and is reflected in the waters of the large artificial lake, surrounded by a varied natural landscape. The area of Guardialfiera includes a vast expanse of plain with farmland and forests, such as that of San Nazzaro. The Liscione Dam, which created the Lake of Guardialfiera, was built on the River Biferno between the 1960s and 1970s to provide drinkable water to the surrounding villages for agricultural industrial and domestic use. The artificial lake has a maximum surface area of 7.45km², a depth of 2-3m and is populated by a wide variety of fish
