Venafro (IS) is located in the foothills of Mount Santa Croce (1026m) on an open plain where the footprints of previous residential settings can still be seen, from the general outline of the founding settlement to the present day urban fabric.
This area stands on the Western boundary of Molise, nestled between Campania, Lazio and Abruzzo and crossed by the rivers Volturno and San Bartolomeo.
The city is considered the "gateway to Molise" because it is an obligatory transit point for those coming from Campania and Lazio. It is also known as the “city of 33 churches” because of the large number of religious buildings in its territory. These include the 15th century Co-cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta located at the foot of Parco Oraziano.
Also noteworthy, amidst the elegant buildings that characterise the town, is the 20th century Palazzina Liberty, previously a hydroelectric plant and later a cinema.
Important historical and cultural sites include: the Roman Amphitheatre, as known as the "Verlasce", Castello Pandone and the French military cemetery.
