The small borgo of Matrice (CB) is located in the Apennine mountain range of Molise and occupies an area populated by the Samnites in the 4th century and later conquered by the Romans. Traces of the Roman occupation can be seen today in the areas of Vicenne and Casale.
In the historical centre are Palazzo Ciaccia, a residence dating to the 18th century in local stone, and the 13th century Parrocchia di San Silvestro.
A low hill in the open countryside is the setting for the 12th century Romanesque Church of Santa Maria della Strada, one of the most ancient religious buildings in the region of Molise, with an adjacent bell tower.
