Grammichele (CT) was founded by Prince Carafa Branciforte in 1693, following a devasting earthquake that destroyed the old residential centre of Occhiolà. It has an exagonum layout spread out around the hexagonal piazza Carlo Maria Carafa which has a sundial in its centre which is incorporated into an enormous bronze statue of a kneeling man, imprisoned in a ball made of circles which represents his time by Murat Cura.
On the square are the Chiesa Madre dedicated to St. Michael Archangel, which has a broad staircase, and the Town Hall, a building from the 1800s designed by Carlo Sada which houses a small archaeological museum.
Welcoming the visitors to the square is a bronze statue of the Prince of Butera by Paolo Guarrera which stands on a base that represents unfolding levels symbolizing the virtues of knowledges: philosophy, religion, science, politics, literature and art.
The ruins of the ancient centre of Occhiolà are located nearby, in a hilly area with a view over the Valley dei Margi.
