The rural borgo of Occhiolà is situated in a hilly area close to Grammichele (CT) with a view of the Valley dei Margi from Caltagirone to Mount Etna. The borgo, of Medieval origins, was inhabited by farmers and herders until 1693 when it was destroyed by an earthquake. The ruins of ancient workshops and houses can be seen today. A narrow lane with dry stone walls leads to what remains of the castle. Archaeological excavation has revealed traces of an ancient settlement dating to the Bronze Age.
Present-day Grammichele, a hexagonal shaped city created by Fra’ Michele da Ferla for Prince Carlo Maria Carafa, rose from the ruins of Occhiolà.
