Geographically speaking, the Park lies in the North-Western sector of Murgia, the Alta Murgia, straddling the provinces of Bari and Barletta-Andria-Trani. Geologically speaking, it is an imposing, now highly karstified, limestone complex which began to emerge 70 million years ago. Since then, it has undergone significant changes, yet still preserves its unique and fascinating atmosphere. An exceptional area, characterized by wide open spaces stretching to the horizon, interspersed with sinuous hills that reach altitudes of up to 600m above sea level.
The Alta Murgia National Park is home to sites of significant historical, archaeological and paleontological interest, whose outstanding examples include the castles of Emperor Frederick II (pride of place to Castel del Monte), ancient shelters, jazzi, farmsteads (masserie) and dinosaur footprints.
