Castel del Monte is a 13th-century fortress built at the behest of Frederick II, Emperor of the Kingdom of Sicily, on the Western Murge plateau. Located in Castel del Monte, a hilltop village 540m above sea level, it stands 18km from Andria near Santa Maria del Monte (BT).
It was inscribed in the list of national Italian monuments in 1936, and as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
The octagonal building has an octagonal tower at each point. The towers are 24m in height and slightly taller than the walls of the internal courtyard. The internal space has two floors, 3m and 9.5m above the courtyard. The trapezoidal rooms are divided by walls that stretch from the corners of the internal octagon to the corners of the external one, where each of the eight towers sit.
