That Dirty Black Bag, eight-episode TV series inspired by Sergio Leone’s unforgettable dollar trilogy, began with a low-cost web series shot by Mauro Aragoni in Sardinia in 2014 which told the story of a bounty hunter in 19th century Mexico tracking two bandits, who carries a mysterious black bag everywhere with him. Aragoni also directed the TV version alongside the Irish director Brian O'Malley.
The series was shot in Spain, Morocco and Italy where locations included several areas in central-southern Apulia (Murgia, Salento), which became a wild west of dry, wild, almost desert - the open spaces associated with the land conquered in the American continent two centuries earlier.
The locations in Apulia were concentrated particularly in the area of Garagnone: the ancient ruins of the castle built by Federico II near Poggiorsini (also the Capurso and Melodia masserias) and Spinazzola, on the edge of the National Park of Alta Murgia, frame several scenes which also featured a far west setting.
In Murgia, the hilly area of central Apulia, the series shot in Altamura (Jesce masseria, Pisciulo caves), Gravina and Santeramo (De Laurentis wine production).
Further south, the production set up near Fasano (Brindisi) and in Martina Franca (Taranto), in Lecce and Melendugno (Salento).
The pavilions of Bari’s Fiera del Levante were also used, transformed for the occasion into a proper soundstage where interiors in classic Western style were built, and some specially created exteriors.
