In the 1200s, the Longobard Castello Baglioni in Graffignano (VT), whose borgo dominates the Tiber valley, passed first to the Baglioni family who gave it the name and then to Pandolfo dell’Anguillara, governor of Viterbo. In the following century, it allied with the powerful municipality in the hostilities against the city of Orvieto.
The 15th and 16th centuries saw many territorial disputes within the family which were finally brought to an end by Pope Adrian VI (1522-1523) when he confiscated the feudal holding. However, Pope Clement VII returned it in 1531, while 1546 saw the resolution of the territorial argument with the community of Civitella d’Agliano about the boundary line still known as La Litigata (The Disputed Area) today.
The ancient borgo of Graffignano, the so-called Di Dentro (Inside), stands on the peak of a small rock and develops around the fortress in the typical medieval layout of a feudal castle.
