Castel Sant’Elmo is a medieval castle located on the Vomero hill in the location where a chapel dedicated to St. Erasmus stood in the 10th century. At 250 m above sea level, this strategic position was always greatly sought-after for control of the city, gulf and surrounding hills.
The first references to the Castle date to 1275. Over the centuries, there have been various interventions of restoration and expansion which have modified the original structure. It was first a citadel for armies, then from 1860 to 1952 a military prison, after which it passed to military ownership until 1976. Significant restoration work has brought the original structure to light, making the ancient walkways, guard walks and underground areas visible again.
Today the castle is a cultural multipurpose space that provides exhibition halls, a history of art library, an auditorium for conferences, concerts, theatre and cinema performances, temporary shows and contains the permanent display “Napoli Novecento 1910-1980”.
