Few other monuments lend themselves with equal generosity to the founding legends, history and daily life of Naples. One of the most inventive Neapolitan legends holds that its name refers to an egg that Virgil is supposed to have hidden inside a cage beneath the castle, upon which depend the fortunes of both the Castle and the entire city.
