The fishing village of Bordighera stands on a hill that plunges down to the sea, 20km from the French border. While the historical centre, laid out in an irregular pentagon with fortified walls, shows its late medieval origins, the architectural heritage as a whole presents an English influence. This is due to its popularity in the 1800s among English travellers, in part influenced by the novel Il Dottor Antonio by Giovanni Ruffini.
Many landmarks are linked to people who spent time here, such as the Lungomare Argentina – the longest shorefront walk on the Riviera di Ponente – which is named for Evita Peron. Queen Margherita of Savoy chose the neoclassical Villa Margherita as her residence, it is now an art museum displaying the collections of the Fondazione Terruzzi. The famous painter Claude Monet loved the landscape of Bordighera so much that he painted it 34 times.
The exotic Pallanca Garden is also a notable point of interest. Created in 1860, it houses 3,200 plant species including a 300-year old Copiapoa, a genus indigenous to Chile.
