The fishing village of Lerici, in the province of La Spezia, overlooks the famous Golfo dei Poeti (the Poets’ Gulf), on the Ligurian Riviera di Levante (Coast of the Rising Sun). Its position in a natural bay makes the landscape particularly evocative, and it is as much loved by foreign tourists today as it was in the past by great writers such as Lord Byron and Mary and Percy Shelley. Now a museum, the imposing 12th century Lerici Castle (1152) rises above the village from the promontory.
A famous swimming area, Venere Azzurra, is part of the Lerici municipality as is the village of San Terenzo, which hosts the 15th century San Terenzo Castle perched on a rocky outcrop and the elegant Villas Marigola and Magni, the latter once the residence of Percy Shelley.
