Porto Venere is a Ligurian municipality in the province of La Spezia. It stands at the extreme south of a peninsula that creates the western side of the so-called Poets’ Gulf. The three islands close to the peninsula – Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto – were declared UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 along with Porto Venere.
The village is home to some ancient and evocative buildings, including the Church of St. Peter, whose original structure dates to the 5th century while the characteristic Gothic Genovese black and white bands were added in the 13th century and restored in 1935. The church and its bell tower stand in a privileged position on the Promontorio delle Bocche, a rocky outcrop that extends into the sea with a small bay dedicated to the English poet Byron. Seen from the sea, the ancient structure resembles a fortification more than a church.
The Church of St. Lawrence and Sanctuary of the White Madonna is a Romanesque construction built in 1098 which has undergone several restoration attempts, but has kept its history intact. The nearby Doria Castle is a majestic military fort that dominates the historical centre with its colourful seafront buildings.
