Triora (IM) is a medieval borgo situated at an altitude of about 800m in Valle Argentina. The ancient area is a combination of alleyways and small stone houses that huddle, almost buried, beneath the highest part of the borgo. The ruins of the ancient defence towers, the castle which was built entirely from the rock where it is positioned at the highest point, and the encircling walls of the ancient borgo which still surround the town are clearly visible.
In the late 1500s, several local women were accused of witchcraft which sparked one of the most famous trials in Italy, this tragedy gave the medieval borgo the nickname of the witches’ village. These events are documented in papers conserved in the small Museo Etnografico e della Stregoneria (Ethnographic and Witchcraft Museum).
