Levanto, in the province of La Spezia, is a valley of olive groves, vineyards and pine forests which runs alongside the Ligurian Sea to the promontory of Punta Mesco. It can be considered an access point to the Cinque Terre and an extension of the same, not only for its geographical position but also for the similar interweaving of nature, history and culture.
The streets are lined with Renaissance palaces and, in Via Garibaldi in particular, with houses that have been brought back to their original colours. The Loggia comunale in Piazza del Popolo, whose latest construction dates to the 16th century, is particularly interesting. Originally used for commerce, the building has been recognised by UNESCO as a “monument that is a witness to culture and peace” and is remarkable for its perfectly balanced arch and 15th century fresco of the Annunciation. The Church of St. Andrew the Apostle, dating to 1222, has a Ligurian Gothic facade which alternates white marble with local green serpentine.
Levanto Castle, a 16th century circular tower with quadrangled building and a rampart walk, stands in what was the southern part of the ancient city walls.
